You know what they say, “April showers…”.  For many couples, the idea of rain on their wedding day seems like the worst possible luck. While there are somewhat comforting symbolic meanings behind a rainy day, for most, that is just not enough. For all the optimists out there, it has been said that a rainy wedding day symbolizes a marriage that will stand the test of time. Rain, itself, is a sign of renewal and devotion, it helps nourish the Earth. These are beautiful things we also hope for in a marriage. A fresh start, new beginnings and a life of growth and good things to come.

All symbolism aside, a rainy weather forecast is not what most couples envision for their wedding day. Sadly, we are not able to predict or manipulate the weather so instead we must prepare for it and keep our fingers crossed we never have to resort to it. 

Make a Rain Plan 

Whether or not we want to believe it is true, having a rain plan is non-negotiable especially if any part of your wedding is outside. A rain plan is a series of adjustments that are unique to your ceremony and reception venue. Making sure there is an additional option for pictures that you love, a place to store wet umbrellas, an option to erect a tent at the last moment and a clear path for your guests to walk along are examples of what you may need in your rain plan.  It is important that your vision can still come through even if the rain demands to be present on your big day, so work with your wedding planner, venue and vendors to make sure you are still going to end the night on cloud nine…even if it is a rain cloud.

Come Prepared

In the event that you have to brave some wet weather, it is always best to be prepared.  First and foremost get some umbrellas to protect you and your wedding party.  We love the idea of  clear bubble umbrellas; they will not hide your gorgeous ensemble, but they are also super cute in photographs. Get or borrow some cute rain boots for walking outside…another cute addition to some of your outdoor pics. Other essentials will include absorbent towels, a hair dryer and some extra socks for the men.

Don’t Freak Out

Easier said than done when it is your wedding day, but the bottom line is, you won’t be any less married if it is raining. Yes, your vision may change slightly, but the reason for being there, the reason your friends and family are there is to witness the love between the two of you. Weather is the one thing that you cannot control on your wedding day, no matter how much you prepare. Our advice is to just roll with it, there is absolutely nothing you can do to change the rain’s mind, ruining your wedding day and dampening your mindset are not worth it.

Embrace the Rain 

Instead of fighting it, why not make the most of it. A super cute rainy photoshop clad with rainboots and umbrellas, a reason to stay inside where the AC is pumping, a dance party in the rain. Remember the reason for celebrating this glorious day…your love for one another, and that is one thing the storm clouds can not chase away.  Remember what the rain symbolizes and think about the good luck that the rain is symbolically supposed to bring to your marriage; good luck and great things to come.

Although rain is not desired by most couples, there are cultures that believe in the symbolism of rain and the idea of it being an overwhelmingly positive sign on your wedding day. Rainy weather has become synonymous with a strong marriage and balance.  It marks a fresh start for newlyweds and predicts fortune and fertility. Rain on a wedding day may not be ideal, but welcoming the symbolism of what it means, could make the idea of it seem a bit brighter (no pun intended…or maybe it is).
