For some of our couples, a wedding is the perfect time to throw caution to the wind and go all out (we’ve always adopted a “your day, your way” and a “go big or go home” philosophy when it comes to weddings). Throwing a real showstopper takes a lot of planning, attention to detail, and understanding just how important something new and different really is.
We have had the pleasure of sampling some of Molecular Food and Cocktails creations at industry celebrations, and we cannot say enough about how innovative and unique this “wedding enhancement” is. For those of you new to the game, molecular mixology is a fun and interactive way to experience your favorite drink. Think bartender meets mad scientist and get ready to craft your favorite cocktail. Between the guest engagement, the beer floats and the infused ice cream, your guests will be intrigued by this rare, interactive treat.

Tell us a little bit about your company and the experience that you offer:
We offer interactive and unique science-themed experiences with cocktails and desserts. Primarily cocktail bars but once in a while offer science-themed dessert stations.
This service is perfect for clients who are looking for an engaging, playful, and interactive experience when entertaining. Our presentations are very visual, out-of-the-box, and sensory-forward.
Our COVID pivot enabled us to explore opportunities to bring this to the virtual world. By condensing and packaging this experience in a box – we were able to enhance the typical virtual experience with something interactive and engaging for the client to do at home – perfect for the DIY mixologist. Our molecular mixology virtual services encourage participants to explore molecular gastronomy with our molecular cocktail kits.
What led you to start your amazing (and very unique business)?
I have a STEM/science background. I started the company in 2012 as a kid science party event company in the DC metro area. Many parents always remarked how they wished they had interactive science party experience and the natural way to expand the brand was to get into the drink and food industry using a similar concept as my kid business (www.stemkids-va.com).
We admire you for pivoting during COVID and creating a new branch of your company… Tell us everything!
Once everything shut down, I did a couple of virtual happy hours while in quarantine. We mostly encouraged pantry and refrigerated available ingredients because movement was restricted at that time. Once some of the lockdown restrictions started to change, I started sending very simple ingredients to participants. This was the beginning of my research on the kit or subscription box model as I expanded my virtual cocktail hour base to people outside the DMV. I had to learn local laws of shipping alcohol, shipping edible goods, logistics, and travel preservation for some of the goods (like fresh fruit) and packaging. Over the last few months, I’ve been tweaking and improving the process as I continually sent hundreds of kits to as far as Alaska, Florida, and California.
What sets you apart from other luxury add-ons when it comes to weddings and special events?
My science branding and interactive kits are unique and fun. As an add-on, this stands out because it’s not traditional and typical!
If you had one bit of advice for your clients when trying to decide whether or not to add a guest experience like yours, what would it be?
Be open-minded, adventurous and creative when creating memorable moments! Ask if such an experience matches your personality and style and what you hope your guests to remember from your special day.
If you want your wedding guest experience to stand apart from the rest, we highly recommend giving Molecular Food and Cocktails a shot (no pun intended)!! We think you will agree that this will be a wedding extra worth talking about for years to come. And when those virtual happy hours need a spruce up before or after the wedding…?
